Let's Adventure to Micanopy

Founded in 1821, Micanopy (pronounced mih-CAN-oh-pee) is a tucked away treasure, south of Gainesville and north of Ocala. With a friendly population of 652 whose historic homes are situated on generous lots (minimum lots are 0.5 acre).

On a Monday the streets were quiet, yet live music still filled the air from the Coffee n Cream shop. As I slipped in and out of local antique shops the owners were warm and full of fun conversation.

At The Outpost I chatted with the owners about the original Florida Highwaymen paintings they showcased and the tragedy that so few of these pioneer artists remain with us today.

At the House of Hirsch Too Antiques the owner told of his past as a photographer. He pointed to a faded black and white image tilted on the edge of his desk. The worn image captured a relaxed President Jimmy Carter at a table between two others. He shared the moments leading up to his chance encounter with this historical figure. While the other media were locked out, his happenstance situation led to the photograph of his career.

The library, churches, shops, and the Herlong Mansion Bed & Breakfast take you on a journey to a different time where languid summer days are spent on front porches swapping stories with visitors.

Micanopy Historic Cemetery

My obsession with all things southern gothic led me to the Micanopy Historic Cemetery, and it did not disappoint! The tombs were intricate with ironwork fencing that spoke of a time in our history when families were buried in plots nesting together beneath the earth. It was quiet, peaceful, and had a dreamlike quality to it. I found it difficult to tear myself away from its otherworldly beauty.

Micanopy is everything I love in a historic Florida town and I can't wait to return.

Let's keep adventuring...both on and off the page!
