In The Waiting

The query process begins this Friday for my debut novel. It won't be my first time. However, I feel far more prepared for its lengthy journey this second attempt. During the wait, it's easy to grow obsessive and anxious, so I find it most helpful to throw myself into research for my next manuscript.

My Pioneer Days In Florida is a book written by Emily Lagow Bell which documents her family's experiences as they acclimated to Florida pioneer life (1876-1898). The racism is cringe, but I'm sifting through that for the gems of first-hand pioneer experiences, and those are plentiful.

I'm only on page seventeen and Emily has already experienced being chased by an alligator, swarms upon swarms of no see ums, pigs drunk on soured palmetto berries, narrowly escaping a Florida panther attack, witnessing multiple bear attacks on pigs, and a floating body in the intracoastal waterway.

Florida pioneer life was wild and treacherous. I'm excited to continue learning and planning in the coming weeks. Then, onto drafting this summer.
